History of Popeyes

Started by Al Copeland, as a competitor to Kentucky Fried Chicken that we all know as KFC, Popeyes is the United States of America’s second-largest chicken restaurant. Standing right below KFC, the very first Popeyes shop opened in Arabi, Louisiana of New Orleans on 12th June 1972 under the name “Chicken on the Run.”

The fast-food chain that we all love so dearly today failed within a few months of its set up. In the early days of Popeyes, it sold traditional mild chicken which was not a winner. The team soon realized that to stand against KFC, they will need something phenomenal. After the restaurant closed, the team worked to create a spicier version of their fried chicken, and Al Copeland reopened the fast-food spot four days with a new chicken flavor on the menu “Mighty God Chicken,” and the names were changed to Popeyes Famous Fried Chicken.

In the year 1976, Copeland began to sell his restaurant’s franchises starting from Louisiana. The restaurant was gaining popularity, even though the growth was not very rapid during the early stages. It was in the year 1983 the very first Popeyes shop opened in Canada. One year later, the restaurant had already opened 500 outlets. In 1985, Popeyes became the third-largest quick-service chicken, in terms of the number of outlets.

In 1991, Popeyes expanded its roots in Malaysia, and the same year Copeland’s company filed for bankruptcy protection as, by the year 1990, Copeland Enterprises was in $391 million in debt. After the court approved the plan, AFC – America’s Favorite Chicken Company was founded as the parent company for Popeyes.

1999 Popeyes finally touched billion-dollar mark in its annual sales and received the MenuMasters Award for its rice dishes in Louisiana Legends. It was in the year 2001 that this quick-chicken fast-food chain achieved its rank on which it stands upon till today.

There was this one category where Popeyes was able to defeat KFC, and it was its BONAFIDE Chicken which beat the Original Recipe of KFC in the National Taste Test. Starting from Arabi, Louisiana, today, Popeyes has opened more than 3000 outlets all around the globe.
