About Old Navy

Old Navy is an American retailing company that deals in clothing and accessories. It is owned by Gap Inc., which is an American multinational company. Its flagship stores are in Chicago, New York City, San Francisco, Seattle, Mexico, and Manila.

History of Old Navy

In the early 1990s, Target’s parent company, Dayton-Hudson Corporation, intended to establish a less expensive store than Gap called Everyday Hero. In 1993, Millard Drexler, the CEO of Gap at that time, opened Gap Warehouse in the Gap outlets, where the products sold were at a much lesser price than Gap.

However, the brand name Gap Warehouse was too similar to the parent company, so in March 1994, it was renamed to the name that we all know today; Old Navy. The new name was inspired by the name of a bar in Paris. The Gap Warehouse stores were 10,000 square feet, whereas the latest Old Navy stores were a phenomenal 15,000 square feet huge!

The first Old Navy stores opened on 11th March 1994 in towns of northern Carolina; Pittsburg, Colma, and San Leandro.

The Format of Old Navy Stores

Old Navy stores were designed like grocery stores on purpose. They had shopping carts, flowing aisles, and small impulse items at the checkout counters. Old Navy stores had cemented floors and metal shelves. The checkout counters were made from polished and pressed board and galvanized metal. These features were enough to give the stores a typical warehouse feel. The vast number of employees working and the colorful arrangements around the stores set Old Navy stores apart from other clothing stores. During that year, 42 new Old Navy stores were opened, and 45 Gap Warehouse stores were renamed Old Navy.

Growth of Old Navy

Old Navy snowballed. In 1997, it became the first retailer to cross $1 billion in the first four years of its conception. It had opened 500 stores by the year 2000. By 2001, Old Navy had expanded internationally, with 12 new stores in Ontario, Canada.

With growing competition, a new logo was introduced along with the remodeling many Old Navy stores to New Old Navy stores in 2005, which were more like boutiques rather than grocery store feel that old stores depicted.

In 2011, Old Navy changed its marketing approach. They re-branded their company to market it as a family-oriented environment. This project was named project ONE, which offered a more vibrant, comfortable, and smoother shopping experience for the entire family.

In 2012, Old Navy faced significant competition from H&M, and the company started losing substantial sales. Gap Inc. hired Stefan Larrson, an executive at H&M who brought about numerous changes to the Old Navy. The changes included hiring designers away from Rebook, Nike, Coach, and North Face, who started designing clothing for Old Navy. As a result, the sales of Old Navy soared to $6 billion in one year, almost equal to the combined income of Gap and Banana Republic divisions.

In 2017, a new Old Navy flagship store was opened in Times Square, New York, which needs no further elaboration.

On 28th February 2019, it was announced that from that point onwards, Gap Inc. and Old Navy would operate as independent entities.

Things You Did Not Know About Old Navy

With Old Navy being an internationally renowned name, we are sure there are a few things you still don’t know. Old Navy is pretty well known for its courage to experiment. But not all experiments are a success. Old Navy has also seen failures, but that did not stop them from trying new things and making their place in the market.

  • In 1995, Old Navy opened a coffee shop in one of its stores in San Francisco. They believed it was something the customers would want during their shopping spree. They also opened Old Navy Kids in Littleton in 1997, a new division for children. Both of these retail experiments by the company failed. Old Navy shut down the Old Navy kids division six months after its conception.
  • The logo of the company has been changed several times. Old Navy was using the third logo by the year 2005. In 2005, the then president of the company, Dawn Roberston, believed that the competition was seriously increasing and the company had to bring its game up. Hence, she introduced a new logo which was used up till 2009. She also remodeled many Old Navy stores with the idea of re-branding.
  • The re-branding that Dawn Robertson did was a failure. She ordered the stores to be remodeled into boutique styles since the company faced tough competition from Hollister Co. and American Eagle Outfitters. The new stores were inclined toward women’s fashion. The store remodeling in Florida took $5 million. It was completely different from what the theme of Old Navy was. It failed dramatically.
  • In 2011, the company needed to re-brand Old Navy as a family-friendly clothing store. For this purpose, they used a fictional character for marketing, which is known as Jenny, who is a married woman with one child. She depicted a typical Old Navy customer. They presented the idea that the store was for everyone in the family. The stores were made more bright and colorful.
  • Old Navy has been playing smart forever. They hired staff from their competitors. As mentioned earlier as well, Old Navy hired an executive from H&M.
  • Old Navy offers markdowns on their products twice a week, usually Sunday and Monday.
  • Thursday is a designated day for sale at Old Navy. They call them Signage Days which are separate from the markdown days. New arrivals are also announced on this day.
  • Old Navy online stores have a more significant price reduction during the sales days than some of their stores.
  • We are sure you don’t know that a new product is most likely to go on a 40% sale after six weeks of its launch.
  • A fun fact that will make you laugh is; that Old Navy stores compete with their online stores! These divisions operate independently, and each would want you to shop from them.
  • Several discount coupons can be redeemed simultaneously (up to 3) while shopping at the Old Navy online store.
  • Old Navy offers reward programs regularly. You get rewards every time you shop. You earn Old Navy Super Cash which you can save and use for shopping more at Old Navy!
