History

Jerry Baldwin, an English teacher, Zev Siegl, a history teacher, and Gordon Bowker met while studying at the University of San Francisco. They came across Alfred Peet, a coffee roasting entrepreneur. They were impressed and inspired by his style of roasting beans and planned to sell high-quality beans and equipment by him. Before naming Starbucks, the two names coined were Cargo House and Pequod. Terry Heckler, Gordon Bowker’s partner in his advertising agency, suggested the three partners name their coffee house with something that starts with “St.” According to him, the names beginning with St were influential, which proved to be true for Starbucks. The first Starbucks coffee house finally opened in Seattle, Washington, on 31st March 1971. In the year 1976, the coffee house moved to 1912 Pike Place.

It was in 1984 that Starbucks bought Peet’s, as they had grown way more popular than the expert Alfred Peet. Two years later, Starbucks opened six stores in Seattle and started selling espresso coffee. In 1987, the Starbucks coffee house chain was purchased by Howard Schultz, owner of II Giornale Coffee. The same year, Starbucks outlets opened in Vancouver, British Columbia, Illinois, and Chicago.

1996 was the year when Starbucks broadened its horizon into the market outside North America. This year, a Starbucks outlet opened in Tokyo, Japan. The following outlet opened in the Philippines. In 1998 Starbucks stepped into the market of the United Kingdom.

Today, the American coffee house, Starbucks, rules the coffee houses worldwide and operates 30,000 outlets worldwide!
