This Year In Gaming

February 22, 2022

Whether you’re playing adventure games, MMOs, or rainbow riches, 2022 is an exciting year for all gamers and has the potential to be an all-time great. Naturally, we’ll have to wait until the very end to play some of the most thrilling AAA games.

Last year wasn’t a bad year for video games, but it wasn’t the year it could have been.

This isn’t a full list of every game due out in 2022, and it doesn’t include the numerous sleeper indie hits that will undoubtedly follow, like Inscription in 2021. These are all of the major games that will be played next year that you should be aware of.

Elden Ring

We defy anyone to name a more powerful pairing than Hidetaka Miyazaki, the creator of Dark Souls, and George R. R. Martin, the author of Game of Thrones. George R. R. Martin, to be precise. The creator of Game of Thrones helped create the lore and mythos for this massive action RPG, which, like its predecessors the Souls games, Bloodborne, and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, emphasizes exploration and harsh third-person combat.

But this time, it’s all taking place in a massive open-world environment. The Souls games are known for being difficult, but Elden Ring is a must-play this year if you appreciate punishing difficulties and want to lose yourself in a fascinating fantasy universe.

Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands

Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands will satisfy those who have been craving more Borderlands. It’s a spinoff from Gearbox’s popular franchise, as well as a sort of sequel to Borderlands 2’s Tiny Tina’s Assault on Dragon Keep DLC. Tiny Tina is a fantasy RPG that brings out the big guns: Andy Samberg, Will Arnett, and Wanda Sykes will all do voice acting for the game.

Starfield

This has the potential to be the year’s best game. Starfield is a new IP from Bethesda, the studio behind Fallout and The Elder Scrolls, that has been dubbed “Skyrim in space.” That implies you could play it for over 100 hours and yet not see everything. It takes place around 300 years from now, after a brutal conflict between two factions, and you take on the role of a modest space explorer. Starfield will only be available on Xbox One X|S and PC, and it will be available through Game Pass.

Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection

Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection isn’t a fresh entry in Naughty Dog’s renowned action-adventure series, but it does provide the perfect excuse to revisit two of its best titles, arriving just in time for the Uncharted film adaptation to hit theaters.

Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, both rebuilt for PS5 and include both 60fps and 120fps graphics settings, as well as spatial audio and DualSense capability.

OlliOlli World

Skateboarding games, such as Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 and Skate City on Apple Arcade, as well as simulators like Skater XL, have resurfaced in recent years, absorbing a significant portion of our time.

But first, there were the OlliOlli games, which perfectly encapsulated the genre’s well-known one-more-go addictiveness. The third entry of the series is the most ambitious yet, replacing pixel visuals with a hand-drawn look reminiscent of a Saturday morning cartoon, as well as branching paths and quest lines.

It appears to be a cuddlier, more friendly game than its predecessors, which were easy to pick up and play but didn’t hold your hand, but we trust creator Roll7 to maintain the series’ highly refined trick-based gameplay.

Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga

In the blocky shape of Lego, the Skywalker Saga gives you another chance to immerse yourself in George Lucas’ sci-fi fantasy universe. But this isn’t just a rehash of The Complete Saga with The Force Awakens thrown in for good measure: this one features actual Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga space travel.

The existing films in the game are being recreated, and you may play them in any order you want, but you’ll also be able to explore space, just like you could in Lego Marvel Superheroes’ Manhattan. You can also fight and explore the interiors of Star Destroyers, which are each constructed out of 18 million digital bricks.
