About KFC

KFC is an internationally renowned name that needs no introduction. The fried chicken by KFC is not just good, but ‘’It’s finger lickin good’ as they say. KFC was the first franchise to give some solid competition to the hamburgers which were the most dominant fast food of the time. After all these years, KFC continues to serve people all over the world with the best fried chicken.

You may think you know all about KFC, but we can assure you that what you know is not all. KFC is not just fried chicken, but it is a living example of how one can use their skill to become successful. It is a success story of how a person does not need to be a big-shot to be a successful entrepreneur. To be a successful entrepreneur, all you got to have is skill and dedication.

History of KFC

Who knew a five years old kid would grow up to be the face of the second largest fast food chain of the world? A boy who was left behind at home every day to take care of younger siblings by his mother after the bread-earner of the family died.

Harland Sanders was taught to cook by his mother when he was seven years old so that he could feed his two younger siblings while his mother went out to earn. By the age of 13 years, Harland Sanders had tried his luck with many professions but had little luck. In 1930, when was 40 years old, he took over a Shell filling station just outside North Corbin, Kentucky. He started serving the travelers with the food that he had learned, including fried chicken, steaks, and other dishes. He served people from his dining table for four years after which he purchased a larger filling station. Here he expanded to six tables.

By 1936, he was so successful that he was given an honorary title “Kentucky Colonel” by Governor Ruby Laffoon. The very next year, his restaurant was expanded to 142 seats. He also purchased a motel across the street and named it Sanders Court and Café.

Pressure Fried Chicken

It took 35 minutes to fry chicken in an iron pan. Harland Sanders wanted a quicker way to cook his chicken. He did not want to fry it deep because he believed the quality was greatly reduced that way. In 1939, first pressure cookers were introduced in the market. They were mostly used to steam vegetables. Harland Sanders modified one of these pressure cookers into an incredible pressure fryer, which helped Sanders achieve the fried chicken of the quality he desired in the time he desired.

The Original Recipe

The final recipe with 11 herbs that we love today was finalized in 1940. The 11 spices have never been disclosed, but we know it contains salt, pepper, and everything that we already have on shelves but which ones exactly, nobody knows!

Road to Establishment of KFC

Sanders closed his café in 1955 after the plan for Interstate bypassing Corbin was announced. He traveled to the U.S and started franchising his fried chicken recipe to independent restaurant owners. By 1952, he had managed to franchise his recipe to his friend Pete Harman who owned one of the largest restaurant chains in Utah at that time.

It was Harman who initiated the slogan ‘It’s finger-lickin’ good’ and the name Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC). He started serving fried chicken in a bucket which is a signature serving at KFC today. By 1963, there were 600 outlets of KFC that made KFC the largest food operators in the United States. KFC was the pioneer of popularizing the fried chicken in the fast food industry, where hamburgers were dominant.

In 1964, Sanders sold the company to an investors’ group, which was led by Jack C. Massey and John Y. Brown Jr. for $2million. He signed a contract according to which Sanders was to receive a lifetime salary along with an agreement that he would be the quality controller and trademark of the company.

By 1970, the number of KFC outlets had reached 3000, spreading in 48 countries. In 1971, the company was sold to a packaged food and drinks company, Heublein for $285 million. Sanders died in 1980. At the time of his death, KFC had spread t0 6,000 outlets worldwide.

After numerous changes in the ownership, KFC was sold to PepsiCo. In 1986 for $850 million. In 1987, PepsiCo. Opened a franchise in Beijing, China becoming the first Western food chain that opened in China. By 1994, there were 5,149 outlets of KFC in the U.S and 9,407 outlets overall, all around the world.

By the year 2015, the company lost significant business to other retailers. Chick-fil-A became the leading chicken retailer in the United States. To be back to being number 1, a new initiative was launched with a plan to revamp the décor, packaging, the uniform, and the menu. From May 2015, new series of advertisements also went on air that featured Darrell Hammond playing Colonel Sanders. After different actors playing the role of Colonel Sanders, Reba McEntire was chosen to be the first ever female to play the role of the face of KFC in January 2018.

KFC Today

Today, KFC stands on the second spot after McDonald’s on the list of the biggest fast food chains in the world! The menu of KFC has expanded from just fried chicken to sandwiches, wraps, salads, French fries, and soft drinks that are mostly supplied by PepsiCo.

The secret recipe with 11 herbs continues to be a trade secret even today. Larger portions of the fried chicken meal are still served in a paper bucket, just like Pete Herman did it in 1957. The most popular slogans that are associated with KFC are “It’s Finger-Lickin’ Good,” “Nobody Does Chicken Like KFC,” and “So goo.”
